Solar

The most commonly known type of clean energy is solar power. Solar power uses the energy generated by the sun to power electrical devices. Solar panels are used to collect the light and transform it into energy that can be used by common devices. Wind

Wind power is becoming more prevalent as a means of generating renewable energy. To generate the energy a wind turbine will be erected and when the turbine moves with the wind it generates energy. Wind turbines are largely used in Europe as the climate is ideal for turning the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy.

Biomass

Biomass energy is not as commonly used, but is energy that is generated from organic materials. To create biomass energy these organic materials will need to be burnt or converted into methane gas, biodiesel fuels, and ethanol. For use in residential settings biomass energy can be generated from a wood-burning oven, but it is unlikely that residential biomass energy can be created by the conversion of the organic substances.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy is derived from the heat that is generated by the Earth. Hot water or steam that is generated naturally can be used to create energy and this will be considered geothermal. There are a number of geothermal systems which can be used to heat a building by drawing the heat from the ground and pumping it into the building.

Hydro Power

Hydropower is a clean energy which is generated from moving water. The moving water will be passed through a water turbine and as the turbine spins it will generate electricity. This conversion is similar in nature to wind power as the kinetic energy of the water is changed into mechanical energy. The water used for this energy is often recycled back into the system or forms part of a dam where natural flowing water is used.

Biofuels

Biofuels is a type of clean energy that is generated from the burning of animal or plant substances via combustion. One of the problems faced with the use of biofuels is that it cannot be easily transformed into a liquid state. This means that biofuels are not able to power vehicles which use petrol in its current form. The methods of creating biofuels are also challenging and difficult to maintain on large scales.

There are a number of different types of clean energy that can be used to replace coal, gas, and oil. Many of the more commonly known clean energy sources can be used for commercial and residential properties, but others are harder to use for residential settings. The other point of difference between the two is that natural gas usually emits far fewer greenhouse gasses, especially carbon dioxide when both furnaces are running in top condition. Oil furnaces tend to need to be maintained more often than gas to stay at optimum efficiency, however. The oil companies like to point out that even though gas is far less polluting during use, the extraction process for gas releases lots of the methane into the air which is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. New regulations have gone into effect to limit these emissions, so it remains to be seen how much better gas will be than oil.

The Price Of The Furnace Is About The Same

Between oil and natural gas, the prices of the furnaces are fairly similar, but an electric furnace is usually much cheaper. In most places, electricity is far more expensive so it’s not usually a good option in places that have cold, harsh winters. Electricity can be competitive in areas where a heat pump can be used, especially if central air is considered and solar has been installed to augment the price of grid electricity. For now, in the coldest parts of the country, natural gas is the leader in price.

If you are now considering getting a new furnace you should check the prices of the fuels in your area since they can be different in each location. The gas companies almost all have accurate price comparison services to allow you to compare before you switch and you should ask if they are offering rebates for switching as well.
